Day 2 - Sporting Extravaganza

Started today the way I intend to start every day of this trip, in the gym. Here is the view from the cross-trainer at the MGM, looking south towards the Luxor and Mandalay Bay.

Lots of live sports to watch on the TV today, starting with the Reds @ Mets. I decided to hang out at NY/NY so I could get a good seat in the Sporting House for the Euros.

I opted for breakfast in the Italian restaurant in NY/NY. I had the three cheese omelette, which was excellent!

After breakfast I sat in the sports book for a while to watch the baseball. The NY/NY sports book is one of the smaller ones in Vegas, but they still have around 50 large screens showing every live event of any note happening in the sporting world. I love hanging out in these joints watching half a dozen games at once!

After a shaky start, Johnny Cueto was dominant, as the Reds completed the 3-game sweep.

I then moved into the Sporting House sports bar to watch the Euro matches. I sat with a bunch of Germans as we watched Germany beat Denmark 2-1, whilst Portugal were beating Holland by the same score. This part of my day included several surprisingly good Fire Rock pale ales!
It was now time for lunch, so I decided to undo the good work I had done at the gym in the morning, by renewing my acquaintance with Fatburgers! This is a rare west coast burger chain, and my medium burger and fries were exquisite.
I then dozed in my room for a while, with one eye on the US Open, which Jim Furyk managed to donate to Webb Simpson (although people who don't have proper first names should not be eligible for major sporting events!)
Next was an hour by the pool to make a start on my tan. I floated round the superb MGM lazy river, and then read CardPlayer magazine on the lounger until the sun forced me inside.
After all this touristy stuff, I decided it was time I played some poker. I sat in a 1/2 game at the MGM and played solid for a couple of hours to recover my losses from the previous day.
Dinner was sushi. The place I wanted to go to (Goyemon on S. Decatur) had a big queue waiting for a table at 8pm, so I went to Sushi 21 in the next block, and ate more than I should have.
After a nap I played another couple of hours poker, for a tiny profit, to end a very enjoyable day.

  • Are you not allowed to take any pictures in the casinos? Feel very jealous of your self-indulgence - enjoy. I take it you are not back for the stupid golf thing at the weekend.
